Old Sheave Tower Tea Light

A bit of Waterloo Heritage

“Absolutely magical . . . a jewel in the midst of a beautiful wetland!” That is how an heritage architect described it.

Built by Allan Bowman in 1876, the Sheave Tower , 31’ tall, is the oldest hydro-generating system in Ontario .

Water from Blair Creek ran through the sluice and turned a vertical turbine shaped like a corkscrew, producing15 additional kW of power for the Blair Mill across the road, which once ground corn for Schneider’s pea meal bacon.

Long a magnet for artists, this image has been brushed onto a canvas by almost every local painter.

Old Sheave Tower is now available as a memento of Waterloo Region, just in time for Christmas gifting!
